Dear Diary: My Blog Turns One

By the time this post goes live I'll be living it up in Austria most likely yodelling with goats in the hills or, if not, at least sticking my full head under the chocolate fountain in our hotel, either's fine by me. But despite my absence, I couldn't let this day go by without marking the occasion because today is the day my little blog turns 1 year old. Yes, it's been a whole year since I wrote this post proclaiming I had no idea what I was doing but was going to give a shot anyway. And, if I'm honest, a year on I still have absolutely no clue what's going on, in fact, perhaps even less of a clue than when I started. But as my first blog post states, I love to write and the fact that, one year on, there's people out there who actually like to read what I write...well isn't life just pretty darn peachy?

Throughout the past year I've had quite a few people get in touch and ask for tips about starting their own blog. Catch me on a good day and I'm all 'yeah hun, best hobby ever' but after a day of writer's block, crap lighting and page views that make me want to crawl in a hole and never come out, I might not be so positive. Because blogging is bloomin hard and time consuming and quite often emotionally draining in a dementor kind of way. And when it's really hot outside and all you want to do is run around fields in a bardot top and straw hat catching Pokemon but instead you've got 6 posts to schedule because you've not posted in 8 days so now the internet has forgotten you exist, it can be easy to just want to slam your laptop lid closed forever. However, you resist the urge because your blog is your baby and what sort of Mother would that make you?

But although the past year has been more work than I ever could have imagined, it's also been the most exciting year of my life. I've already been lucky enough to experience some amazing opportunities that this time last year I could have only dreamed of. Plus there's just something about sitting in your bedroom reading exciting emails from brands in your pyjamas with coffee stains down your top and some cute bits of crisps hiding in your hair that makes you feel like a #GirlBoss who can pretty much achieve anything. And although I know that I'm just the tiniest, full stop sized bit of plankton in the blogosphere, I'm hoping that this next year will be filled with just as many 'omg wait until I text my Mum about this' moments.

However, as much as sponsored posts and fancy events are cool and all, without a doubt my favourite part about this whole blogging experience are the people who take the time to read my posts. Lolz are you cringing yet cause I am? But I'm being 100% serious. There's actually no better feeling than hearing that someone has enjoyed reading something I've written, it's helped them in some way or even just made them laugh for a minute despite the fact they've got super bad cramps and their boyfriend is pretty much the worst person on the planet because he didn't say no quick enough when asked the "do I look fat in this?" question. And I guess that's why I feel like I've not been on this journey alone. I'm not writing to a brick wall anymore like I was in my first post. I'm just sitting down with a cup of coffee talking to some friends about life - moaning about our bad skin, trying to find ways to cheer ourselves up when our hormones are having a nice lil party in our bloodstream and sharing beauty tips to make ourselves feel a bit less ugly.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you ever happen to click on this blog, by accident or on purpose, know that you've got a friend here and that this is a place where we can sulk when we feel like we don't have it all together and celebrate on the rare occasions when we feel like we do. Thanks for making this year so special by clicking, tweeting and faving and for persevering with my earlier posts because geez oh they were awful. Here's to year 2 of Unf4bul0us boos...

  2. Congrats on your blog turning one and Happy Birthday I guess! I agree with the comments part, it's nice to know that you've managed to reach or connect with someone, it's also a sense of achievement. I know a lot of people who think blogging is stupid, but in reality it really does take a lot to manage one and if you can manage a blog and have some success from it, then in my eyes you can do anything!
