Mac Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Lady Be Good Review

This week I did a bad thing. But it's January and I've got a bad case of the January blues and plus I totally deserve it because I have been back at Uni for a whole three days and have only had one near train miss. So yes, I'm now the proud owner of the much anticipated Mac Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Lady Be Good. A couple of days after these beauties came out I tried to pick up this shade in Covent Gardens (fancy schmancy) but after waiting in a nauseatingly stressful queue just to have a Mac MUA Goddess look in my direction, I discovered it was sold out. That night I decided to try and get it online but the guilt and shame of my recent spending habits was too much and I reluctantly closed the tab. Unsurprisingly, the next day I changed my mind because I work hard and totally deserve nice things (especially things that are going to improve my appearance) but by then it was too late and Lady Be Good was Lady Be Gone.

However, I didn't give up. After a furious Google search I found my beloved shade in Selfridges. Granted, it was an extra £5 for postage but, in all fairness, they do send their stuff in that cute yellow box with matching tissue paper which makes you feel Iggy Azalea fancy because yes I can afford to shop in Selfridges, sign me up for Made in Chelsea season 11. So partly because I'm proud of myself for tracking it down and partly because I know a lot of people like to read reviews before they buy (because £21 is a big chance to take anything), I thought I would tell you what I think of it.

When I first saw the packaging I felt a mixture of excitement and nostalgia. I think Mac have made such a good call to keep the classic black lid that we all know and love but the clear tube also makes it feel a bit different and special. However, I do not love that the liquid lipcolour is taller so sticks out by a mile in the sea of all my other Macs in their cute little storage pot. Design Flaw!! The wand is heart shaped and a good shape and size for the lips. It also brings out just the right amount of product which is important because I can't afford to waste a drop!

Lady Be Good is a beautiful, Kylie Jenner-esque warm nude with pink and brown undertones. I would say it's close to the colour of Velvet Teddy but maybe slighter browner and a lot more pigmented purely because of the liquid matte formula. The formula itself makes application really easy and smooth. However, understandably, because it is so matte it can be a bit drying. This also means that any cracks and chapped areas can show up but I've found that moisturising my lips a few minutes before I put it on makes a big difference. I also sometimes like to apply a tiny bit of Velvet Teddy on top as they are so similar in colour and since Velvet Teddy is a matte lipstick itself, this still maintains the matte effect but just adds a little bit of moisture if needed. However, the formula does make the liquid lipcolour last for such a long time and, despite it being nude, it takes a long time for the colour to start to fade.

So the big question: is it worth the money? I would say yes, I would definitely buy it again. I know I've bought a shade that I'm going to get so much wear out of and I really do love my mattes. I always find that you do get what you pay for with Mac and the quality is so obvious in this lipcolour. I definitely want to pick up some more shades, I've got my eye on light pink DivineDivine, deep cranberry Dance With Me and bright coral Mademoiselle. So I'm sure I'll start to build up my collection when the February and possibly even March blues hit. Have you tried any of these matte liquid lipcolours yet? What are the shades you love or are lusting after? Thanks for reading!

  2. This looks like such a stunning shade! I've been lusting after Velvet Teddy, but this looks great. I love liquid lipsticks as they last so much longer, and I reach for them so much more than my proper lipsticks.

  6. Desperate for this! I did exactly the same yesterday, walked into my local MAC, stared longingly at the Retro Matte's to find Lady Be Good had gone. I almost bought another shade but decided I should just wait, and after reading your post, I deffs think I should wait to spend my money on this shade. Velvet Teddy and Honeylove are my fave MAC shades (I did at MAC Matte post recently if you fancy having a peek!) and this liquid lip colour looks so similar.

Loved this post and your pictures so much!
